History of Shri Panchmukhi Hanumanji
The origin of Sri Panchamukhi Hanumanji can be traced to a story in Ramayan. During the war between Prabhu Shri Ram and Ravan, Ravan took help of Ahiravan, the king of Patal lok. Hanumanji in order to protect Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman formed a fortress with his tail. Ahiravan took the form of Vibhishan, the noble brother of Ravan and took Prabhu Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman to Patal lok.
Hanumanji entered patal lok in search of Prabhu Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman, He found that life of Ahiravan was hidden in the five lamps which were placed in different directions. He could be killed only by extinguishing all five lamps the same time. To accomplish this Hanumanji had to take the form of Panchamukhi Hanumanji. This form of Hanumanji has five faces. Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garud and Varaha are the four other faces along with Hanumanji’s face. Hanumanji, using the five faces in different directions, blew out the lamps thereby killing Ahiravan.
